Artist’s Statement
Charmagne Vasquez is an artist of contemporary paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Her current works often focus on interconnectedness and humankind’s role within earth’s dynamic biology. The artworks are made spontaneously and ecstatically, with traditional and non-traditional media. Vasquez builds up complex, colorful layers, organic landscapes and menageries of emerging forms. The tension of daily human existence grapples with a deeper, inherent need to live more harmoniously within a symbiotic web of life. Urban and feral. Civilizations and hinterlands. Decay and regrowth. States of reverence intersect curiosity and exploration. Interdimensional figures signal to the viewer, beckoning toward the ever-communicating global biome. Vasquez’s canvases pay homage to sacred Mother Earth, aligning with collective energy and honoring indigenous, ancestral ties.
Vasquez has been internationally collected, published and exhibited. Notable, recent inclusions of her artworks appeared in pacificREVIEW: moment(o) by San Diego State University, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, and the Artist + Researcher Project with Phoenix Bioscience Core and Bentley Gallery. Her process cross-pollinates with her other practices, free verse poetry and songwriting. She enjoys working on site during travels, and in her Phoenix, AZ studio. More at charmagnevasquez.com.
